Bulgarian Lev to Ukrainian Hryvnia

The Bulgarian lev (international symbol: BNG, code: 975) is the national currency of Bulgaria. The lev is divided into 100 stotinki. Since 2002 the lev has been pegged to the euro at an exchange rate of 1.

The image of a lion on Bulgarian currency appeared in the 13th century. The first currency, called the “lion,” emerged in Bulgaria in 1879 and was in circulation in the country until 1952. The Ukrainian hryvnia (sign грн, code UAH) serves as the national currency of Ukraine. It is not printed or accepted outside it. Kopiykas are used as change for the Ukrainian hryvnia.

Every UAH has 100 kopiykas. The currency has been in circulation since 1996. Prior to that, there was the karbovantes, and even earlier there was the Soviet ruble. The word “hryvnia” comes for the term “mane”. It defined coins with strings, resembling a bright mane of a golden horse. The word became widespread in old Rus. It was used as a weight measurement.
