Afghan afghani to Gambian Dalasi

Afghani (sign ؋, code AFN) is the currency of Afghanistan which is not used for payment in other countries. One afghani equals 100 pul coins. Afghani has been issued since 1926.

Originally, coins made only out of silver were used on the territory of the Islamic state. First notes were printed in 1935. The Afghan rupee had been used hand in hand with afghani until 1978. Up until 2002, there had been different types of afghani used in the country and issued by different military and political organizations: “davlati” and “dostumi”, but the new leader, Hamid Karzai, reformed the currency leaving only one type. Banknotes had architectural monuments, key industries and infrastructure depicted on them.

The Gambian dalasi (sign D, GMD) is a currency used on the territory of Gambia. The Gambian dalasi can be exchanged to coins called bututs. Every GMD has 100 bututs.

The currency has been issued since 1971 replacing the old currency – the West African pound sterling. The name “dalasi” comes from the name of the West African 5-pound sterling note. It was called “dala” which translated to “dollar”. The currency floats, and its rate is not connected to specific currencies of other states.
