Afghan afghani to Ethiopian Birr

Afghani (sign ؋, code AFN) is the currency of Afghanistan which is not used for payment in other countries. One afghani equals 100 pul coins. Afghani has been issued since 1926.

Originally, coins made only out of silver were used on the territory of the Islamic state. First notes were printed in 1935. The Afghan rupee had been used hand in hand with afghani until 1978. Up until 2002, there had been different types of afghani used in the country and issued by different military and political organizations: “davlati” and “dostumi”, but the new leader, Hamid Karzai, reformed the currency leaving only one type. Banknotes had architectural monuments, key industries and infrastructure depicted on them.

The Ethiopian birr (sign Br, code ETB) is a currency issued and accepted for payment on the territory of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian birr can be subdivided into smaller coins – cents. Every ETB has 100 cents.

The currency has been issued since 1976, replacing the Ethiopian dollar. The banknotes’ design embodies the character and uniqueness of the country. You can see portraits of local people, traditional farm animals, coffee plantations and people working in fields with oxen.
