West African Franc to Ghanaian Cedi

The West African CFA franc (sign BCEAO, code XOF ) is a unified currency used in 8 African states, that are parts of the CFA. In 2020, the participants are planning to eliminate the currency on their territories. Centimes are used as change for the West African CFA franc.

Every XOF has 100 centimes. The currency has been in circulation since 1945 after the French West African franc was eliminated. Representatives of the local fauna are used in the notes’ design. There are rhinos, dromedaries, red-crested turacos.

The Ghanaian cedi (sign GH₵, code GHS) is the currency used in circulation in Ghana. The currency is not used outside the country. The Ghanaian cedi uses pesewa as change.

One cedi equals 100 pesewas. In 1965, the cedi became the sole currency in the country. Before that, Ghana had changed its currency several times. Since the country was a British colony, its territory allowed pounds sterling and later on, it was replaced with the West African pound. Afterwards, the Ghanaian pound took its place. All notes, except 50 cedi, depict portraits of the state’s politicians. The 50-cedi banknote portrays the cocoa fruit.
