Gibraltar Pound to Afghan afghani

The Gibraltar pound (sign £, code GIP) is a sovereign currency of Gibraltar. The currency is also known as the livre. It is used along with the British pound sterling at par.

Pennies are used as change for the Gibraltar pound. One GIP has 100 pennies. The currency became the main payment unit in 1898. Every 2 years, the Gibraltar’s Mint manufactures a 2-pound coin with a new design. There are coins telling a story of a well-known myth – 12 labors of Heracles.

Afghani (sign ؋, code AFN) is the currency of Afghanistan which is not used for payment in other countries. One afghani equals 100 pul coins. Afghani has been issued since 1926.

Originally, coins made only out of silver were used on the territory of the Islamic state. First notes were printed in 1935. The Afghan rupee had been used hand in hand with afghani until 1978. Up until 2002, there had been different types of afghani used in the country and issued by different military and political organizations: “davlati” and “dostumi”, but the new leader, Hamid Karzai, reformed the currency leaving only one type. Banknotes had architectural monuments, key industries and infrastructure depicted on them.
