However, the first attempt to establish the currency dates back to 1844 and is connected to the country gaining independence from Haiti. The Chilean peso (sign $, code CLP) is the national currency issued and spread only in Chile. The Chilean peso can be changed into coins named centavo. Every CLP has 100 centavos.

The currency had appeared in circulation in 1817, but was later replaced with escudo. However, the Chilean peso has been issued again. Today, both currencies are used at the same time. In 2008, the state mint has issued 50 commemorative coins with a misspelling of the country’s name. Some of these coins were sold at auction. Having a face value of 50 peso, their price could go up to 20 thousand peso. This nuisance led to the fact that the head of the mint was fired.
